Platypus Records Amsterdam: classics and obscure records on the Zeedijk

Platypus Records Amsterdam: classics and obscure records on the Zeedijk

04-05-2026
On the Zeedijk in Amsterdam, there's a record shop that shows why analogue music still holds its appeal in 2026. Olmo van Kranen takes you to Platypus Records.

The Zeedijk in the Nieuwmarkt district is a street you won't soon forget. Unique shops, its own atmosphere, and places that hold stories. One of those places is Platypus Records at number 45: a record shop in Amsterdam where you can find both timeless classics and obscure vinyl treasures.

What is Platypus Records?

Platypus Records is an independent record shop on the Zeedijk in Amsterdam, run by Duo Penossi. That's the Amsterdam DJ duo Bas and Raul, known for their broad musical knowledge and parties that range from classics to the most unexpected records. In the shop, you'll find a mix of vinyl, CDs, and music not readily available on major streaming services.

Why visit a record shop in 2026?

It's a logical question. But the answer is simple: streaming music means you don't own anything. Stop your subscription, and your collection disappears. If you buy records for years, you have something that's truly yours, a cupboard full of music that you always keep with you.

That idea appeals to many people, and its popularity is growing. At Platypus Records, you can see that reflected: pop-up events with queues outside, and visitors coming specifically for the shop.

Artists at Platypus Records

The shop has now built a reputation that extends beyond the Nieuwmarkt neighbourhood. Artists like Wild Child, Premier and The Alchemist know how to find Zeedijk 45. Mussolini from New York was also there recently. That says something about the place's reputation, without it having become a tourist attraction. It remains, first and foremost, a shop for people who love music.

Duo Penossi: music from classics to the obscure

Bas and Raul from Duo Penossi are the driving force behind Platypus Records. Amsterdammers might already know them from Museumnacht, where they completely set the mood. They are regularly present in the shop; you might just bump into them when you walk in.

Their collection ranges from well-known records that everyone knows to vinyl you won't find anywhere else. This makes Platypus Records an interesting place, whether you're just starting to collect records or have been building a steady collection for years.
