Cultural Heritage students from the University of Amsterdam have made a video about the fires (lit by a pyromaniac) in the Bethaniënbuurt (1966). For this, they spoke to and filmed a number of neighbourhood protagonists, such as Bob, Jaap and Sylvia.
“In the first months of 1966, the Nieuwmarkt neighbourhood was gripped by a series of arsons. Neighbours still have vivid memories of that anxious period. Sixty years later, Bob returns to his childhood home, 38 Kloveniersburgwal.”
A memorial to the local residents who lost their lives then.
This Sunday, local residents are invited to come to the Neighbourhood Room to watch the video and discuss it with each other and with the students.
