In the heart of Amsterdam, right in the Red Light District, stands Café de Rode Laars. An old brown café like you hardly see them anymore. Since 2015, it has belonged to Jeroen van der Valk. In this video, he talks about his café, the neighbourhood and life between the stories.
A neighbourhood full of people
The café is in a special place, where tourism is sweeping the city in waves. But inside, it is still quiet, warm and familiar. "This is my living room," says Jeroen. "80% of the people who come here know each other. And everyone is welcome."
Between boots and stories
A red boot hangs from the facade, a nod to the past, when the neighbourhood still made boots for sailors at the port. Inside, time has lingered. Wooden tables, a tap full of Bootweiser, and guests who have been sitting at the same bar for years.
Jeroen is sure: this café is not going anywhere. "I'm not selling it. This is my baby. I will continue to work here until I die."
