Nieuwmarkt neighbourhood to discover for yourself with audio tours

17-02-2026

Architour offers a series of self-guided audio tours that allow you to explore Amsterdam at your own pace, directly via your smartphone, via QR code or link in your browser. Curated by local architects and architectural historians, the tours tell the stories behind neighbourhoods, buildings and urban development.

Walk through an interesting area of Amsterdam and listen to informative explanations about the neighbourhoods, buildings and projects. The audio tours are completely free to listen to.

Audiotour Red Light District

During this audio tour, Architour takes you from the Prins Hendrikkade to the Nieuwmarkt. A walk through the oldest part of the city, where water, trade and buildings have set the rhythm for centuries. Behind the narrow facades and winding streets lies a carefully constructed city - shaped by economic growth, densification and constant change.

What today is a busy area turns out, on closer inspection, to be a layered urban landscape. Monumental buildings, hidden courtyards and unexpected sightlines together tell the story of Amsterdam in its earliest form.

Nieuwmarkt audio tour

During this audio tour, Architour takes you through one of the most multi-layered parts of Amsterdam. You will walk from the Nieuwmarkt towards the Namenmonument and along the way discover how architecture, urban development and history come together here. Buildings suddenly turn out to be no longer background scenery, but bearers of stories.

The tour shows how this neighbourhood has shaped itself over the centuries: from medieval structures to modern interventions, from lively squares to quiet places of great significance.

More than a walk

Both audio tours last about two hours and can be followed independently. No guide, no group, no set pace. Just a route and stories that open up the city. For municipalities, BIZs and organisations, these tours offer a low-threshold way to make urban quality visible. Not by adding something new, but by focusing attention on what is already there.

The audio tours are offered by Stadsdeel Centrum.
