On a busy street in the centre of Amsterdam, artist Tim Cantor runs his gallery. Not a typical location for contemporary art, but that's exactly why it suits him. "It is not a typical gallery neighbourhood," he says. "And that's exactly what I like about it."
A chance photo, years ago
Eleven years ago, Tim was walking through Amsterdam with his wife Amy. "It started raining while the sun was shining, that special light you sometimes have here," he says.
He points to a photo he took then. "That picture I took right across this street. One of my favourite photos of Amy, taken years before we knew this was going to be our place."
A hidden gallery
Tim Cantor's gallery is not on a typical 'art street'. "We were unknown here," he explains. "You can feel it when people come in: they hesitate for a moment, look around, wonder what this is. And I love that."
Surrounded by art history
The place breathes past. "Rembrandt is a hundred metres that way, and the Waag is there. We are literally among history. And I feel that. It's in the air here."
He smiles. "This is a dream come true. I hope I get to stay here forever."
