Together with Amsterdam expert Bob Maas, we once again set out on a tour of the city. This time we took a look at the iconic Waag on Nieuwmarkt. Many people know the building, but don't know what went on at the top.
In fact, the tower contained a cutting room, the place where the surgeons' guild gave lessons on real bodies. Often those of criminals. Rembrandt's Anatomy lesson from Dr Tulp? That scene took place right here.
"That painting is really just a picture of what happened here," says Bob.
The masons also had their own space here. Those who wanted to belong to the guild had to make a masterpiece and these are still hidden in the walls. Look closely at the brickwork around doors and windows: you can see the craftsmanship there.
