In the winter of 1966, the Nieuwmarkt district lived in fear of a pyromaniac. The deliberately set fires claimed no fewer than eight lives. The police were powerless, the neighbourhood organised its own night patrols, and panic took on serious dimensions. A group of Public History students from the University of Amsterdam conducted extensive research into the affair, made a short film, and interviewed local residents.
